Siôn qualified as a teacher in 1978 and worked in schools across London. This included subject teaching in Waltham Forest, Greenwich and Croydon; middle leadership in Kingston-upon-Thames and deputy headship in Hammersmith and Fulham and Greenwich. Following a period as a consultant leader Sion joined the National Association of Headteachers in 2009.
Throughout his career as a school leader Siôn was involved in developments outside school. These included working with the DfES on the original performance management procedure, involvement in several projects surrounding Citizenship, designing and running a ground-breaking off-site facility for disaffected pupils at risk of permanent exclusion which led to extended school type provision in his school, line managing a restorative justice programme that became the template for developments in the area, delivering training on internal value-added processes for SFE and lecturing at Teach First’s summer school.
His role at NAHT is that of Assistant Secretary (Secondary) working in the Educational Management department. His role involves daily contact with school leaders seeking professional advice and guidance, advising on NAHT policy development in the secondary phase and representing the Association at meetings with a range of bodies. Contact with schools has also been maintained through becoming a governor at primary and secondary schools in West Sussex, where he lives.
Siôn is a firm advocate of work-life balance. Interests include rugby(boots finally thrown away), running (competitively when the ageing body permits) and music, both composing and performing (occasionally at the same place more than once)
