Mary Van de Water qualified as a teacher at Moray House in Edinburgh and took her first post as an assessing teacher in a challenging special needs setting. After completing an M.Sc. at the University of Edinburgh, she took up a post in The Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to train their new English teaching staff, write two textbooks and teach the top two classes of science students. After another year teaching writing skills to an entire year at the Xian Foreign Languages University complete with another textbook, she returned to the UK where she moved into teaching ESOL in the statutory sector. This was followed by a move into London local government and then local education authority work. She developed a project in south London to give non-London student teachers the experience and training necessary to be effective in inner city schools.
She is now retired but remains engaged with teacher education.
